Normandy® Wood Shutters
Making Classic Affordable.
Normandy® offers discerning homeowners a custom hardwood shutter at an affordable price. Why compromise quality for price when you can have both? Enhanced design options make your shutter designing and customization decisions simple.
From Traditional to Trendy.
For the ultimate brilliance and resilience, Norman uses multiple sequences in prepping the wood surface for the finish – be it paint or stain. This necessary and labor-intensive process creates the most favorable surface, resulting in a uniquely grained and luminous finish. Normandy’s wood grain characteristics are exceptional. With stain, the distinctive wood grain has an enhanced depth and character with the texture of the timber being defined. Like your shutters smooth? Our contemporary paints gleam on the satin polished surface. Whatever your personal style – warm and rustic or sleek and refined – you are sure to find the perfect match for your décor.
Distinctive windows – specialty shapes.
All windows are not created equal. The Normandy specialty collection includes shapes beyond the conventional square and rectangle. If you have arches, hexagons, sliding or French doors, or other unusual window openings – we’ve got you covered. Norman specialty shutters can be crafted to
fit virtually any window opening. Now, every window in your home can be dressed with a Normandy Shutter.
Stability
Quarter-sawn louvers provide a tighter grain that results in durable louvers which resist bowing and warping.
Endurance
Multiple layers of wood are bonded together to bolster the stability of the core of the stile-making for a robust and hearty support system for your shutter panel.
Quality and Value Unmatched. Norman employs the same time-honored woodworking techniques used by artisans of exceptional home furnishings.
Durability
Traditionally used in demanding furniture and building construction, mortise-and tenon joints are designed to withstand the shear stress, and racking forces that occur when operating a shutter. This makes the mortise-and-tenon an ideal joint for shutters.Resilience
Prescription Wood Conditioningâ„¢, Norman patented wood drying technique, dries the wood to emulate the environmental conditions of the location where the shutter will be installed. This practice also reduces post installation shrinking and swelling.

Sussex® Premium Wood Shutters
The secret to a handsome and durable shutter finish really isn’t a secret at all. It takes multiple sequences of sanding with progressively finer sandpaper to open the pores of the wood for coating and smoothing the surfaces.
Each layer is finely coated with high-quality stain or paint. This labor-intensive process is the only way to achieve the translucent, deep finish of a Sussex Shutter.
Some manufacturers rely on semi-custom, pre-painted components. They may have a “cut-down†or “stock†program to reduce delivery times. These shutters may be partially pre-fabricated, many times from outsourced components, and fit together prior to installation. Consequently, short cuts are used, resulting in compromised shutter quality.
Superior Finishes. Other manufacturers endeavor to make a custom shutter, yet fall short of Norman Shutters quality because they use insufficient coating or fail to sand their shutters adequately. Every Sussex shutter is sanded and painted or stained numerous times, assuring a silken and lustrous finish.
The Best Construction.
One of the hallmarks of fine wood crafting is employing the right joint for the job at hand. Proper wood joinery is critical to the prolonged quality of a shutter. Norman recognizes that the sheer and racking forces endured by shutters dictate the use of mortise and tenon joinery.
Traditionally used in demanding furniture and building construction, mortise and tenon joints are designed to withstand decades of shear and racking stress and ensure user and occupant safety. The joint is crafted out of a mortise cut through the wood and a hearty tenon, which fits into the mortise.
Some manufacturers use other joinery techniques, like dovetail joints, which are better suited to drawers and other lightweight applications. These joints are not intended to resist shear and racking forces. Norman Shutters designs and handcrafts your Sussex Shutters with ideal mortise and tenon joints.
At Norman Shutters, the only shutter manufacturer to compensate for wood’s tendency to deform, in this application, by using reinforced engineered wood stiles.
Norman employs a costly and time-consuming procedure that bonds multiple layers of wood together with pressure, heat, and a proprietary chemical formulation.
This imparts an intense level of durability to the cores of Sussex® stiles and results in a robust support system for your shutter panels.
Well-Crafted
A well-crafted shutter closes solidly, does not have unsightly gaps, and stays that way year in and year out.
To accomplish this, each part of the shutter must resist twisting, bowing, cupping and all other forms of instability inherent to natural wood.
Compounding the challenge is the fact that many shutters require pieces of wood that must span over six feet.
More Options than ever before.
Colonial louver 1 ¼â€, Traditional 1 7/8†and 2 ½†louvers, Plantation and Carribean style 3 ½†and 4 ½†louvers. More Specialty shape options then you can think of including elongated and eyebrow arches. Circles, Ovals, Octagons, and Trapezoids – you name it Sunburst Shutters can make it.
More Frame and mounting options than anyone in the industry.

InvisibleTiltâ„¢. One less line in the window. The streamlined appearance, tighter closure, easy cleaning and wider view of the InvisibleTiltâ„¢ feature will amaze you. With the slightest touch, you can adjust the whole set of louvers from top to bottom. You can also choose the split option, that gives you the ultimate control in closing half the window for privacy and keeping the other half open for light.
Perfect tilt™. Motorization has never been so easy. Great for hard to reach windows, PerfectTilt™ can also be solar powered. With a click of a button let in the light when you want it or block it all out when you don’t.
Optimalâ„¢ Anti-microbial treatment. Safeguard your shutters from accumulating airborne germs such as e-coli, salmonella and staph. Optimalâ„¢ is a perfect solution for homes with young children and elderly.
Quarter Sawn.
Like the finest heirloom furniture, Sussex® shutters by Norman are made with quarter-sawn wood to ensure generations of durability. Quarter-sawing makes the wood less susceptible to inherent cupping, twisting, and warping. Cuts are made parallel to the wood’s medullary rays instead of across, which gives the wood remarkable strength and stability.
Unlike other manufactures that use flat-sawn wood, because it is much more plentiful and inexpensive, Norman uses only quarter-sawn boards that are extremely prized in the industry. The tight grain pattern showcases more depth and character, resulting in an exceptionally smooth finish. Look for the distinctive “Ray Flake†pattern in Sussex Shutters. This decorative, wavy pattern ensures that your shutters will endure beautifully for years to come.
